AUGUSTE RENOIR, The Sea at Tréboul near Douarnenez (detail), 1895, Private Collection. « Treboul Coz », this marginal place, has always been loved by painters, including Auguste Renoir, as well as writers and other unique personalities. While contemplating the sublime landscape of the Douarnenez bay, « the most beautiful bay in the world » according to Max Jacob, they can immerse themselves in the mythical history of the town of Ys. A short distance away, Tristan Island serves as a reminder of the loves of Tristan and Yseult (excerpt from the text by André Cariou). Of course, great myths are rooted in exceptional and traditional places… it’s all there! The paintings displayed are featured in André Cariou’s book « Hôtel Ty Mad, la bonne maison ».
